Staphylococcal alpha-toxin is a potent virulence factor produced by most pathogenic strains of Staphylococcus aureus. The toxin causes rapid activation of NF- B, which leads to the expression of IL-8. This P1 peptide contains an uniquely reactive tyrosine residue and may be able to form hexamers, which are very potent in inducing antiserum. Harshman, S; et al., Infect.
