Sodefrin was first isolated from the abdominal gland of the cloaca of the male red-bellied newt, Cynops pyrrhogaster. It showed a species specific female-attracting activity. It is the first amphibian pheromone to be identified and the first peptide pheromone identified in a vertebrate. Kikuyama, S; et al., Science, 267, 1643, (1995); Kikuyama, S; Toyoda, F., Rev.
