Adrenomedullin has been identified as a potent vasodialator. [Cockcroft et al., Br J Clin Pharmacol. 44, 57, (1997)]. However, results from ustilizing different model sysytems has led to differences in opinion reguarding adrenalmedullin’s ability to relax vascular tone [Hamid, SA and Baxter, GF Pharmacol Ther. 105, 95 (2005)]. Adrenalmedullen may be beneficial in diseases such as hypertension, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and myocardial infarction but it can potentiate cancer cells to extend their blood supply and cause cell proliferation.
