Other Names: pTH (1-34); Teriparatide Acetate
pTH (1-34) is osteogenic, thus it is used in treating osteoporosis. Alcohol consumption may reduce its efficacy, so pTH (1-34) may be less effective in treating osteoporosis arising from chronic alcohol abuse. pTH (1-34) speeds healing of bone fractures, especially when it is used in combination with other agents such as bone morphogenetic protein 7 or calcitonin. The osteogenic activity appears to be related to activation of adenylate cyclase. pTH also activates phospholipase C. pTH(1-34) also has potential for treating bone marrow depletion caused by chemotherapy or radiation treatment in cancer patients. Applied topically, pTH(1-34) is reported to be a safe and effective treatment for psoriasis. Cosman, F., Curr. Opin. Endocrinol.
