N-(3-Dimethylaminopropyl)-N′-ethylcarbodiimide hydrochloride, EDAC, EDCI, Water-soluble cabodiimide.
Molecular Weight: 191.7
EDC HCl activates carboxylic acids to form amides and esters. It is soluble in most aqueous and organic solvents and the urea byproduct is also water-soluble. Isolation of the amide or ester product in solution phase synthesis can thus be achieved by simple water-organic solvent extraction. Utilized with N-hydroxysuccinimide (NHS), EDC canbe employed to conjugate smaller molecules, such as small peptides or fluorescent tags to larger biomolecules in aqueous solution, including proteins, DNA/RNA, and antibodies.
