Freeze Drying (Lyophilizing)

Freeze drying, also known as lyophilization, is the process of subliming the ice from a frozen aqueous sample to leave behind the non-volatile, non-aqueous material that was in sample.  Freeze drying is performed at low temperature and is the preferred method of isolating temperature sensitive samples, such as peptides, proteins, enzymes, and oligonucleotides.  AAPPTec offers a variety of laboratory freeze dryers (lyophilizers) for biochemistry applications.


Sublimation occurs when a solid passes directly from the solid phase to the gas phase without melting.  For water ice sublimation occurs at pressures below 6.1 mbar and temperatures below 0 °C.  Likewise at sufficiently low temperatures and pressures, water vapor will freeze directly to ice without forming a liquid.  Therefore successful lyophilization requires an efficient vacuum pump and a low temperature condenser.  AAPPtec’s 2-stage rotary vane and combination pumps, which produce vacuums below 0.003 mbar, provide fast, efficient vacuum in lyophilization applications.
