Phe(F5) was utilized to study the contribution of aromatic interactions to alpha-helix stability (S.M. Butterfield, P.R. Patel, M.L. Waters, J. Am. Chem. Soc., 2002, 124, 9751-5).  Phe(F5) residues stabilize protein structures (H.-P. Chiu, et al., J. Am. Chem. Soc., 2009, 131, 13192-3; H.-P. Chiu, et al, J. Am. Chem. Soc., 2006, 128, 15556-7).  pentafluorophenylalanine can undergo regioselective SNAr chemistry to form para-substituted tetrafluorophenylalanines (L. Qin, C. Seridan, J. Gao, Org. Lett., 2012, 14, 528-31; J.E. Redman, M.R. Ghadiri, Org. Lett., 2002, 4, 4467-9) and tetrafluorotyrosine (F. Wang, et al., Org. Lett., 2011, 13, 236-9).
