Fmoc-Phe(4-F)-OH is utilized to prepare peptides containing Phe(4-F) residues.  These residues are often inserted in place of Phe residues as probes in 19F-NMR (H. Li, C Frieden, J. Biol. Chem., 2005, 280, 38556-61; JG Bann, C Frieden, Biochemistry, 2004, 43, 13775-86).  The dipeptide prolyl-m-sarcolysyl-p-fluorophenylalanine (PSF) has shown promising results agaist human melanoma in mice (KM Dierickx, et al., Pigment Cell Melanoma Res., 2008, 21, 439-50).  Also, studies indicate that the integration of Phe(4-F) residues within protein materials can be employed to tune the material properties, especially mechanical integrity (C Yuvienco, et al., Biomacromolecules, 2012, 13, 2273-8).
