Fmoc-Phe(4-Cl)-OH is used to synthesize peptide analogs in which phenylalanine is replaced by a Phe(4-Cl) residue.  These peptides are primarily utilized in SAR studies and drug optimization studies.  Phe(4-Cl) residues can form a Ru complex, which in turn undergoes SNAr reactions with phenols.  This reaction has been utilized to form bis-aryl ether bridges in peptides (AJ Pearson, P Zhang, G Bignan, J. Org. Chem., 1997, 62, 4536-8; AJ Pearson, et al., J. Org. Chem., 1996, 61, 3940-1; S. Venkatraman, et al., J. Med. Chem., 2005, 48, 5088-91).
